Devil-may-care - Meaning recklessly free of spirit.
I've always thought this phrase, as in "He has a devil-may-care attitude" meant something along the lines of - "The devil may worry about what I'm doing, but I sure as hell don't." In other words, I'm so reckless even the devil is concerned. But, I figured if I ever investigated it I'd find some mundane, boring origin.
I was wrong. The phrase is literally a shortening of "The devil may care, but I do not."
Have you considered that if the devil does exist, he doesn't care about your actions. Therefore do what you feel because morality is what you make it.
ReplyDeleteThat worldview might work if people didn't have such colorful viewpoints on morality. "Do what you feel" works great until somebody "feels" that kicking you in the balls is the right thing to do. Ya dig?
Deletewhat ever helps you sleep at night james...
ReplyDeleteJames that's exactly wrong: if the devil exists he most certainly does care and gain when you sin. Therefore, if you are so sinful that even the devil thinks you are out of line, it aptly means you should be concerned, but you are acting as if you aren't... ;)
ReplyDeleteWow. I think the devil would concern himself less with the sins of sinners and more the weakness of saints. For give my format and grammar but I'm on a phone. What however forgives your stupidity. God is for people who have to be led when they have freedom to lead. There's nothing waiting for you. No clouds no river no hope. What you do here matters but not how you think. "That dudes a twat"-Lucifer
DeleteAt least the devil doesn't discriminate; he accepts us all equally. And he never sent any plagues, floods, etc. like God apparently does whenever he gets angry. Oh, and the devil did give us knowledge, creativity and choice.

DeleteI think there is some kind of irony in this post...
DeleteSatan invented DEATH to exterminate the human race (Hebrews 2: 14). Satan is "the angel of Death" who destroyed Jobs family.
DeleteSatan is the Devil and Satan has an insane HATRED for humanity.
I was also unsure about the meaning of this idioms, but finally got to know it is quite interesting idiom, love to learn this.
ReplyDeleteI wonder devil-may-care.
